Hello Dear Ones,
You may be wondering why it’s been SOOOO long since I’ve
performed in your area, and why I haven’t released a new
CD in a while.
As many of you know, over the past two years I have immersed myself
in the practice and teaching of yoga. In 2010 I took a month-long
200 hr Yoga teacher training at Kripalu Center in the Berkshires,
and since then have been steadily working on an advanced 500-hour
certification. Spirit willing, I will graduate from that program
My love of yoga is not new—I took my first class back in
1975, at the tender age of 18, and it transformed my life. That
transformation has been an ongoing journey (albeit a convoluted
one at times!) that has been a wild and wonderful unfolding.
I used to be a teacher of young children. In my classroom I had
a dress-up corner, where kids could put on various costumes and
pretend to be mothers, fathers, doctors, firefighters, and superheroes.
My life has kind of been like that, as well, as I’ve played
teacher, mother, wife, singer-songwriter, interfaith minister,
yoga instructor, leader of devotional chant, and many other characters.
It’s fun to wear all those hats, but even more juicy to
explore who I am underneath all those roles. Once I think I AM
any of those characters, then I’m in trouble. If I know
it’s a play, and I wear the costume lightly, then I can
have fun with whoever I’m being at the time.
For the past two years or so, I’ve put my singer-songwriter
hat on the hook and have been playing other characters. It had
become clear to me that I needed to explore some other parts of
myself and delve into those more deeply. I’ve stepped way
back from solo performing, but have been touring with my band,
ONE LOVE, leading global ecstatic chanting at festivals, retreat
centers, churches and yoga studios. I’ve been teaching yoga
classes and leading interfaith services, all of which are infused
with singing music that I love.
But, all the while, these past two years have been for me an incubation
period. I am gestating a new version of myself as a songwriter
and performer. And, I love being in this place of mystery, not
knowing exactly what she’s going to look like or exactly
when she will burst forth.
In the meantime, I’m designing a brand-new website which
will be launched this summer, writing some new material, and playing
with lots of ideas as to how to get new music out into the world
in a more sustainable and accessible way. That means less time
in a car for me, and an easy click of a mouse for you!
With that said, I do step out occasionally and do a solo performance,
and my next one will be at the Ithaca
Festival on June 2nd! Check out my calendar
page for details.
In other news, my song “Many Hands” was included in
a book and CD set released last year from Parallax Press, a non-profit
company that publishes books on engaged Buddhism and mindfulness
by Thich Nhat Hanh and other authors. The book is entitled Planting
Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children, and it’s a
beautiful collection of activities and teachings for parents and
teachers to use with young ones. I’m honored to have my
song as part of the curriculum, and love to see all the ways the
music ripples outward!
So stay tuned, my friends, for the unveiling of the new website,
and thanks for your patience and loving energy!
Many Blessings and Deep Peace,
